Did anyone here upgrade their computer from Windows XP to Windows Vista? I'd like to do it, but read a couple of horror stories yesterday where someone's com- puter froze to death, wouldn't print anymore and worse. I'd rather purchase a new laptop with Vista pre-installed, can't afford it right now, though. Any advice/recommendations, or more horror stories? Aaron

I still use XP, and will probably continue to do so for quite some time. For one : it still works. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My printer works, my DVD burner works, by net connection works, and I have sound. At the moment, I see no compelling reason to upgrade, especially if there is a risk that one of my peripherals won't work at all. I'm not buying a new printer (or a new soundcard, or a new graphic card...) just so that I can use the latest OS. And no, "Halo 2" is no reason to switch.
That's just my 2 cents. Then again, at home, I spend all my time on my Mac, very little on my PC...

i got an extra Vista upgrade cd from a laptop i bought but returned after a month. i installed it on my desktop and pretty much none of my hardware was fully supported. i built my computer about 3 years ago and some of my stuff isn't being supported with drivers anymore, so i don't see a future for vista on this computer.
however, i did just get my vista upgrade from Dell (the laptop i replaced the previous one with) but i'm wary to install it.. not because of support, Dell made sure their drivers were included, but i'm not sure how much i really like the OS.
each major Windows OS has been more graphic intensive than the last, and Vista just seems to be too physically bulky for me (as in the windows have thick borders, compared to XP's 5px or so)

I have a desktop I bought as a student and only used linux with it. When I started at my current university there's a facility for students and staff to downloading a free M$ operating system (I only want it for games and for scanning photos). I had a choice of XP or Vista. I chose XP even though both options were free.
My philosophy with Microsoft is to wait two years for them to iron out their major bugs, for drivers to be written and to allow the hardware to catch up with the processing requirements.

I agree with Karla, wait at least a year!
In the organization I work in (I am part of the IT department) we have for various reasons decided not to make the move to Vista as yet and any new laptops that we purchase we still ask for XP. However I am getting a new laptop soon with Vista so that I can put it through the ropes on our network so I will be sure to let you know of any do's or don'ts that I may find.

I tried vista for about a week when I got a new pc and didnt like it, like Karla says if you wait a couple of years everything will be fixed and PC's will be a lot faster.

I've been doing alot of tech reading for a while now and I have heard nothing but relatively good things about Vista. (very hard to believe but its true) So far the only patches to the operating system have been very minor nor security or essential systems related. In fact the last few have been windows wide patches. As in Vista, XP, 2000, ME... As for everyones hard ware not working, I'm going to take a very uncharacteristic for me type role and say its not entirely microsoft's fault. There have been some major procedural type changes that the recording industry has pushed onto microsoft and therefore onto all hardware manufacturers in regards to DRM (digital rights management). Vista has been a long time coming (originally going to be released as Longhorn but that took too long) This should have given the hardware manufacturers enough time to get a head start on drivers. So in my opinion its the hardware companies that are dropping the ball currently. I'll be switching to Visa next time I build up a new computer, which is looking like it will be this fall sometime. Until then XP suits me fine in all of its critical error ways. Now lets wait till Ryan sees this thread...

My Suggestions.... Buy A Mac, and forever have troubles finding decent third party hardware. And in the event you want to upgrade anything on the mac you might as well bend over and prepare for a long night... Rob/Tim

Actually I plan on eventually buying a shed and a wind turbine. Then I'll collect up all the old PCs for free, stick Linux on them and connect them up to a LAN. I'll then access them from a laptop in the house and distribute my simulation across them all. Downsides include wondering where to throw away old computers when better ones are given to me and having to buy a fire extinguisher in case the shed burns down. By that time I might have upgraded to a barn though. Karla

I am a Windows and a Mac dude and I prefer the mac because of it's stability, and no need for any anti virus protection. Rob

shhhhhhh I've been looking at maybe getting a mac lately....
And on viruses, why would anyone want to make a virus that will disrupt %8 of computer owners who by definition are mostly media and art types? Not to mention I don't know of a single corporate server thats a mac so there would be no real profitable reason to hack a mac...

Hmmmmmm
I wouldn't buy it just yet.
Amktor sums up my feelings - the early adopters always bear the brunt of any bugs, incompatibility problems, etc. It's better to stick with a proven product until the new OS is well-established and the initial teething problems (especially surrounding compatibility) are resolved to a reasonably satisfactory level.
XP Pro does everything that I want it to do at the moment - so there's really no reason to blow my hard-earned on something that'll probably just cause me headaches in the short-term. I stayed with Windows 95 for years (I was still running it in 2000) and only went to Windows Me when problems with 95's patchy USB support forced me to...
Stability is pretty much the most important thing to me at the moment.

My first PC came with WinME. Let's just say that this piece of crap was soon replaced by Win98...

Thank's for your input, guys; I decided to wait it out, as soon as I can afford it I'll purchase a new laptop with Vista pre-installed, maybe end of the year, I read your posts and a couple horror stories online, the general consensus is, don't upgrade from XP to Vista, too many incompatibilities. Thank's again for your advice, Aaron
