It does seem like a special event type of a thing.

I've always thought of it as the naturist party frock.

I think body painting is linked to art. It's a different way of painting not using a canvas, but having the same body as the canvas itself. It can be a funny activity to enjoy, but I don't know if I would like to take part into it. I think I would feel myself dirty with all the layers of painting on. On the other hand I have the idea that bodypainting is coming back to the origins. As the same way of being naked. Humanity in the past was naked and feel comfortable about it, they used painting on the body for rituals, parties...

That BBC video provides some insight into the artists' and models' motivations for body painting.  It's intriguing to think of each of our bodies as an 18 m2 canvas!  Perhaps having such a large canvas to work with is a motivation for getting tattoos and piercings?

I think it looks very nice because the painting is the special and so the nudity becomes normal...

But i never did it.

Whenever the subject of body painting comes up, the same picture always comes to mind for me so I thought I'd share!

I love the prism on the back of the African American girl, and I love the brick wall on the back of the more whitely painted girl.

And as for body paint, I think it's cool. Though sometimes, when its just very basic designs like one would get at a normal resort event, i find it more like a girl putting on a pretty dress or getting her hair done for a special event- it adds another level of beauty to her temporarily (with me admiring the beauty (non-sexual) of the woman, as compared to admiring the art for artsake).

A couple of people were just interviewed on National Public Radio who do professional body painting.  Their site has some cool pictures: http://www.livingbrush.com

almost everywhere i look theres something about body painting and although its not really a nudist thing it does seem to be a fun activity probably more easier to be practiced by natursts than other people
