Before now we always holidayed in the Med, but this year we had to take the dog with us so we went to Cornwall, SW UK.

In Spain, Portugal etc, on textile beaches it is thought normal for kids up until the puberty stage to go naked on the beach, around the pool, etc, and about half the women are topless. It shocked me in cornwall to see everyone fully clothed! Even girls as young as 5 wore bikini tops... WHY???

In mainland Europe, nude beaches are usually packed with families. In Cornwall, there were only two single men on the whole beach!

Does this mean that we\'re behind the rest of Europe or more advanced? Were britain\'s beaches ever like those of Spain?

In my opinion we\'re behind the rest of Europe when it comes to stuff like nudity on beaches. I know that it\'s legal to go naked on any beach in Spain but you\'d never get away with that here in the UK. I\'m not sure if Britains beaches ever were like the ones in Spain but my best guess would be no. But give it a few years and global warming may force more people to shed their clolthes here in the UK

It\'s difficult to say, really. Perhaps it just means that Cornwall is behind the rest of Europe!

I probably don\'t know enough to make a reasoned judgement, but I\'d say that you could probably draw different conclusions based on where you went in the UK and on what day you went there. In my experience, if we\'re behind now than we\'re definitely catching up. I certainly think that attitudes towards nudity are becoming more relaxed and you do see more women topless in the UK these days, on non C/O beaches. Granted, it\'s still rare, but I\'ve never really seen it all before this summer.

It needs someone to take a lead though, really. If one person does it, many more will follow. Many people still need to feel that they won\'t be \"unusual\" by doing such a thing - I mean, how many women do you know who would happily take their top off on holiday in Europe, but tell you that \"I couldn\'t possibly do that here!\". When asked why, the response is usually a blank face!

As far as young kinds going naked - that\'s always happened around here. I am talking about very young kids though - I think that parents start covering them up at a much younger age than is the case in Europe. I suppose there\'s a lot of paranoia as regards paedophiles, etc.

And as far as the people count and the demographic goes - well, I don\'t think Cornwall benefits from naturist beaches being widely known. As far as I know, there are no official ones and the ones on which nudity is \"tolerated\" are probably not so well known. I\'m also aware of there being some problems with people having been harassed by the authorities in Cornwall recently, so that may have had something to do with it.

It depends on the day too though. Hot, sunny weekends and bank hols tend to bring out the families. I plan to head to the beach tomorrow if the weather\'s good - and I bet it\'ll be packed with them if it is.

Good post, Noodie, well put. And, Ben, I agree with your sentiments, though the further north you travel, the less noticeable global warming becomes .....

Nudeguy, England is just one part of UK, just as the US is one part of north America....

Hi there, you are all right. I think in general much of the UK is behind Europe but it also depends on where you go. Cornwall is not well known for it´s nude beaches but if you go to Studland Bay in Dorset on a warm summer´s day you´ll have quite a different experience. Always busy with people of all ages. You could almost be in Portugal, France or Spain.

I´´ve heard too that it´s legal to be nude on all of Spain´s beaches but I never see anyone nude on textile beaches. I am in Spain now and it is weird seeing everyone clothed. Bring on the nudies! Best wishes William

It was a beautiful sunny day here today, so I headed out to Budleigh (just got back)

No families at all today, which I was rather surprised at. Well, that\'s not strictly true - there were a lot of families, but they all confined themselves to the textile section.

It was still rather busy on the \"clothing optional\" side though - mainly with couples. Even some twentysomethings... only three of four mind, but some!

Quite an entertaining day today. We were paid a visit by the boys in blue... well no, actually, they were the young ladies in yellow... anyway, they were the police. My immediate thought was \"What have we done wrong?\" as everyone was well past the signage advising that clothing was optional. Turns out that an unexploded mine had been discovered off the coast and they wanted everyone to stay out of the water! \"Enjoy the show!\", they said.

It started to cloud over and get a bit nippy at about 5:30PM, so I put my clothes back on and went up onto the promenade to get a better look at the \"fireworks\". It was obviously a trickier operation than they\'d first anticipated though. The WPC told us to stay out of the water for 20 minutes, but the mine still hadn\'t been blown up when I left. The lifeboat was out there getting swimmers, dinghies, etc out of the water and chasing fishing boats away, and the Royal Navy were out having a look at it, but they seemed a long way off from detonating it. Parking ticket was rapidly running out on my car, so I didn\'t get to see the explosion.

Just proves that more families should go though. Where else can you take the kids to watch something get blown up, for free!
