some of you may have noticed my absence from the forum. i can only apologise to those who read my posts on here, as since i was last on here - i broke two of my fingers on my right hand (which are now healed) so was unable to type properly for quite a while!

i'm going to start asking a question a week. some of these may be repeats of older posts that are forgotten, and others will be new ones. however, i'd like as many people as possible to have a go at these. these posts will be like a blog for me, with you lot commenting on them! haha!

so - first question!-

Why do you think Nudity/Naturism/Nudism is still a 'hushed' topic of conversation around the world today?

post your comments below! the best comment will be thanked in next weeks new question! enjoy!

It's not that people have a problem with us being naked in places - the problem is there very few places for us to be naked

There's nothing to apologise for. Good to have you back.

As for the topic, I think nudity is a hushed topic partly because of fear. So many people are conditioned to feel ashamed of it from an early age, and don't really understand why it makes them uncomfortable. That they can't explain exactly why it makes them feel uncomfortable makes it just that much more uncomfortable. The other part of it, I think, is that people are afraid of judgement by their peers. They are afraid that they will be judged unattractive.

I think that naturism is a hushed topic because it is a big step to take to say that you are a naturist or agree with naturism when you are talking to people who aren't naturists.

Everybody who is familiar with the word naturism has their own preconceptions about what it means.  So if you are talking about being into naturism with someone, then you are allowing yourself to be linked with those preconceptions.  And you may not want to risk people linking you with those preconceptions because you may feel their preconceptions do not reflect you and how you want them to perceive you.

To give you a related example, my girlfriend is Wicca/pagan in her religious beliefs.  But she has found that when she tells people this, they jump to certain conclusions about her, make certain assumptions and start to question her in-depth about what she believes.  So, she has decided that she prefers not to tell people she is Wicca/pagan at all, and thus avoid the discussions which make her uncomfortable, and keep some control over the way she is perceived by other people.

So if you are a naturist and you make naturism a hushed topic, I think it may be because you are uncomfortable with having to explain it to others and deal with their assumptions and misconceptions, and have decided the best way to deal with these is not to talk about them.

Myself, I feel that I should not have to take the responsibility of educating every person I meet about what the fact that I am a naturist means, so even though I am not ashamed to be a naturist, I don't really talk about it to others.

where I work, it would be frowned upon to the point of being fired.  Thus the secrecy.

Where do you work? Do you work for a church or a religious institution?
