i've just spent two weeks in the south of france, without being able to spend any great length of time in the nude. i slept nude, and if i was alone in the villa, i was nude. There were a couple of times (late evening, with nobody around), that the pool was free, so took a little skinny dip (but only very brief, as at certain points in the pool, you can be seen by the other villa's.

however, on a canoeing trip along the Dordogne, i saw people enjoying the sun. the first couple, the lady was bathing topless, and the husband was clothed. didnt pay much attention to it, as its fairly common in france to see topless sunbathing. however, something which took me by surprise, towards the end of out trip, i saw a family of three - husband, wife, and little girl - all nude. now this is not something im 'shocked to see', far from it. but what surprised me was it was in such a busy , public area. sadly i was with my family, or else i'd have found a bay and stripped off! so - my question -

has anybody else seen anything like this, or experienced things like this? lots of people, and out of the blue - nudists?

It's not that people have a problem with us being naked in places - the problem is there very few places for us to be naked

Wow that is great stumbling upon nudists! I believe that more people should think that way.

Did your parents try to shield your eyes or tell you to look the other way?

Only time I've ever been in a similar situation was on a beach in Spain. It wasn't an official nude beach, but there were several topless women, and the occasional nude person which we weren't expecting, but no one made a big deal of it. I wish they had that attitude at beaches here. There's usually gawkers here, which is why I usually prefer the private clubs.

In general people in Spain don't make such a fuss for something like that. Many women are topless in Spanish beaches and this is something quite common since the eighties of XXth century. Although there are beaches officially declared nudist or free beaches (it's not exactly the same), you can find from time to time someone nude in a textile beach. There are some quarrels between local authorities, police and so on... But law is quite clear, what is not banned is allowed.

So in general it can be considered that on any beach in Spain you can sunbathe with your birthday suit. If there's a case like that and someone complain to the police. They usually advise you to go to an authorised beach or where there is nudist tradition. Police aren't going to compel you to do that. Something very different is if someone is making indecent exposure, exhibitionism... This is the theory, but last years there have been some problems between nudists and Town Councils, because local authorities want to limit the practice of naturism. What has happened is that textiles have discovered the goodness of nudist beaches, less noisy, less people, and many of them have begun to make use of nudists beaches but without becoming nudists. So the problem has begun. But who were before, I mean.
