I have several writers I like very much: Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa (both of them have been awarded the Nobel Prize), Tolkien, the Christian French Lebanese Aamin Maalouf.

I've always been a keen reader of Dickens, Hemingway etc.

I guess if we're talking more modern stories though, then it's gotta be James Patterson at the moment, who is a fantastic thriller writer.
I've been finding myself reading more and more autobiographies of late though.
Have recently gone through Mandela's newest one, Obama's newest one, Anthony Kiedis's one, and some of Australians, namely a former footballer and a former cricketer (3 former cricketers actually).

I'm a massive fan of Andy McNab and loved reading Bravo Two Zero and Immediate Action as well as the Nick Stone series. I've just started with a couple of Chris Ryan books too.

I've loved Terry Pratchett's Discworld books since I was old enough to read the first one.

Other than those, I have a pretty wide range of books I like, from low-brow action fantasy stuff like Jim Butcher's Dresen Files series through to stuff like Kurt Vonnegut.  I tend to prefer science fiction and crime/detective fiction but I've read a lot of classic literature too.

Two of my all-time favourites are The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Truman Capote's In Cold Blood.
