The volunteers at ynai send our thoughts to those who have lost friends and family in the worst natural disaster in Australian history.

For those in other parts of the world who are not aware of what has happened here, and still going on, this is the latest information about the tragedy:

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/indepth/section/0,,5018723,00.html

Today on behalf of ynai I donated AUS$5000 to the Victorian Government Bushfire Relief Fund.

For those here in Australia, the CFS in Victoria is in desperate need of the following items, if you can help with any of the following items, they can be dropped of at your nearest CFS Office.

As at: Wednesday the 11th of February 2009, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Bath Soap, Ladies hygiene products, shampoo, dog and cat food, deodorant, colouring in books and pencils to keep the little tackers occupied. With well over 5000 people homeless in these areas, the above will be needed for a while until they get back on their feet.

For those non Australians who want to help, the best and most secure way is by going to this site and making a Credit Card Donation.

http://www.commbank.com.au/about-us/in-the-community/health-and-welfare/bushfireappeal.aspx

The Commonwealth Bank is the government bank in Australia, and it is a secure site. Click on Option 3.
I can confirm that 100% of your donation will go towards this Victorian Government Bushfire Appeal.

Casey, such a donation is very commendable, thoughtful, and surely appreciated by so many of those affected by the fires.  Thank you for strongly representing YNAI during this natural disaster!

Thank you so much Casey for the donation and for highlighting this. Australians have been united by both grief but also hope. As a country we have come together at this tragic time. As well as the the funds you mentioned one of the leading organisers at the forefront of helping people is the Australian Red Cross who are doing an excellent job helping all those being affected by the devastating fires. They have launched the Victorian Bushfire Fund. You can donate or find out more at their website www.redcross.org.au I have also already made a video on how you can help here:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/quiSuPbfcz0&rel=0" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/quiSuPbfcz0&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/quiSuPbfcz0&rel=0</a></a>

Please help if you can.

I'm not even sure if this is appropriate to ask, and if it's not I apoligize, but does anyone know if any of our members here (or their families) have been directly impacted by the fires?

Personally, I have been fortunate and none of my friends or family to my knowledge have been affected. I have lived in rurual Australia and I know how close communities can be. It has been very upsetting and my thoughts are with all those affected and their familes and friends.

Just a warning

When you give money, give it to a reputable charity or donate like casey said, cause there will be conmen who try to take advantage of this situation to scam you out of your money

here is something from the australian competion and consumer commision: http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/859969
Quote
People wanting to contribute to the Victorian bushfire appeals have been put on alert to ensure they are not taken in by scammers.

"In the past, such as during the 2003 Canberra bushfires and the December 26 2004 Asian tsunami, scammers took advantage of people's generosity and kindness," Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Chairman, Mr Graeme Samuel, said today.

"These involved a scammer collecting money by pretending to be a real charity.  Not only do these scams cost people money, they also divert much needed donations away from legitimate charities and causes.

"The scammers can approach people in the street, by knocking on the door, telephoning, sending spam emails or creating false charity sites on the internet.  Always ask for identification, though be aware id may be forged or meaningless.

"The warning signs include:

    * the charity is not known or is well-known but the scam is operating via a fake website, letters or emails
    * the collector tries to use pressure to elicit a 'donation'
    * the collector cannot or will not give you details about the charity, such as its full name, address or phone number
    * the collector becomes defensive over questions about what the charity does and how much of the donation gets taken up by costs
    * the collector asks for cash, won't accept a cheque or asks for any cheque to be made out to them; online collectors will insist on cash money transfers
    * the collector doesn't want to provide a receipt or the receipt does not have the charity's details on it.

"In recent years, scammers have hit the internet to solicit funds.  During the Canberra bushfire recovery, a hoax email was circulated in which it was claimed
a British man living in Dubai had a dying wish to give $15 million to the victims of the Canberra bushfires.  In this case, there was a claim that if the email recipient helped him distribute it, they could keep five per cent, or $750,000, plus expenses.

"Don't open suspicious or unsolicited emails (spam): delete them.

"In the past, websites have been created that replicate all the details of reputable charities – with the exception of where the money is sent.  Scammers usually insist on cash money transfers."

Mr Samuel said people should use common sense and never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone who is not known and trusted.

"If you are unsure, remember legitimate charities are registered at the state or territory level and their details can be checked through the local fair trading agency.   If the charity is genuine, contact details are available from the phone book or a trusted web site.

"Don't rely on any phone number or website address given by the person who first called, visited or emailed you because they could be impersonating a legitimate charity. When you contact the charity, check to see if they have any fundraising campaigns taking place in your area.  Also, warn your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours about the scammer.

People who believe they have been approached by someone impersonating a legitimate charity or by a fake charity, can report a scam

    * through the SCAMwatch website, www.scamwatch.gov.au,
    * to the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 302 502
    * or contact their local fair trading office.

Yes  Martin and Casey both make good points. Always be on the look out for con artists. The funds that Casey and I have mentioned are reputable and so if you would like to make a donation they can be trusted and are doing excellent work helping those affected by this devastating tragedy.

In Australia at the moment there are fires in Victoria and flooding in Northern NSW and in the far north. Lots of peoples lives are being messed up.

This sunday is the national day of mourning for those who died in the fires.

I feel great sympathy with all those not only directly and immediately impacted by these recent vicious brush fires in Australia.  but for those of there family members, friends, business members, and fellow country men/women.  This is something is also close to me considering my neighborhood was surrounded by the devastating Mothers Day fires here this past year.  Fires that consumed land measured in the square miles just in my county alone! Taking numerous houses down with the brush, nearly including one of families.  But we were very fortunate in to have not lost any lives in that man made tragedy.  Something that I must say did not happen in Australia.  Which it makes it hard for me to empathize, because we/I did not have level of tragedy.  So again I must give must sincere condolances to all those impacted and hopes that the perpetrators are found, brought to justice, and that they an find the truth as to why the would started such a heinous act.

Hi Guys,

My apologies for being a very inactive member over the last year.
A lot has changed signicantly in my life over the last 12 months. I have commenced my own business, my wife and I are expecting our first child and we have also been closely involved with the "black saturday" bushfires back in feburary to name a few. Although our house is safe a large number of our family and firends have been affected. The fire's edge was only 2 kilometres from our front door and thankfully a wind change on the night saved our place. I must say that efforts of the community and the resilance of the Australian culture is amazing with the over whelming support and generosity. I am truly proud to be an austalian. Not to mention the international support as well. The devistation that hit that will be etching into all of us for the rest of our lives.
Unfortunately we all choose to live where we live and my wife and i really love the rural lifestyle and the location. But i just wanted to let you all know that it is so important to tell the people close to you just how much you care about them EVERYDAY not just in hard times.

If anyone wants to chat about this im more than happy to talk it out of the forum and one on one. There are some truly inspirational and some sad stories as well that we can all learn from. If anyone followed the fires on google earth or wants to gain some perspective on it i live in a suburb called hurstbridge and the fires closest to us were in kinglake vicotoria.

Thanks for the support and the donation it truly means a lot to the community.
Regards,
David
