Now that "our" new President was sworn in yesterday  , folks in this country and all over the world are talking about a new beginning, a new era.
Even though I'm hopeful, I'm (as always) skeptical;  I believe something got better when I see it got better.  I don't want to cover the major
problems here (the worldwide financial mess, the war in Iraq etc.), just the micro everyday-life stuff:  do you expect the overall "atmosphere" for
tolerance (for us nudies, for instance  Shocked) will improve in the United States?  Will "live-and-let-live" finally prevail or will the bad-religion-induced
stranglehold on people's private environment survive?  What's your prognosis?  Aaron

I'm not holding my breath that any time soon it will be more acceptable.  I think the only way that it might be is if we have a nudist for a President.  The likely-hood of that happening..or at least the likely-hood of them admitting it I feel is zero but who knows.

Aaron - Like you and most people in this great, although confused as of now, USA, I am very hopeful of what the future might hold.

I really liked his acceptance speech, it was pretty much all positive regarding all aspects, esp. about it being a new point in history of the 'impossible Being possible' - i.e. a Black 'President', now that is quite a step in a new direction.  - btw, I am 'white', for what that's worth, oh and about 1/16th American Indian - My wife is 1/2 Cherokee  Wink

People are saying that he is all 'talk' and doesn't have a chance of being 'able' to do all the things he says he is going to do.  ...well, of course not - If everyone is going to say/ believe it can't happen, and continue to go about their business as before.

But, they didn't think a Black man could ever be elected as President (it was about time!).  I would rather some one like Obama - MR President now, would stand up and tell us what needs to be done, and what he 'intends' to do, than someone to stand there as the new President and throw his/her hands in the air and say, 'it is hopeless, there is no way we can climb out of the hole'.  THAT's not going to get the nation and congress pulling in the same direction.

Anyway - Welcome aboard Mr. President.

Now enough about Politics - I am Not generally a political person - back to your question.  Sorry, I got off the subject!!

It's Not going to happen overnight - a change in concepts and 'openness' to new ideas such as the Nude way of life, the willingness of society to live and let live everyone to live in their own way.

But it IS his new way of wanting the USA to open up and allow all races, all religions, all people to be 'accepting' of each other, in the long run - this could help us too.

Acceptance of the Gay community has progressed considerably - although definitely not without controversy on both sides.  The same with us, not as fast as we would like, and faster than many others would like it to - the live in the 'box', never try anything new society.

However, stop and think, and remember what your parents have said - look back and remember how 'few' references were made concerning 'nude beaches', nudist life, nudist camps, etc.  - very, very few, and very few places that one could go to participate outside the home or backyard.  There was not the internet 20 years ago, or it was just beginning to come available to the public.  You had to search forever to 'locate' places that nudity would be 'tolerated'.

Although a 'few' places have closed down to acceptance of nudity, Many more have opened up to each year than have closed.  20 years ago, I was only aware of about 3 nudist camps in the entire state of Texas, I am sure there 'might' have been more, but not many.  NOw I can go to the internet and fine 3 to 4 times that of Land Based, plus 20 or more 'travel' groups.

A similar comparison could be made all over the world, especially those locations near sea shores and beaches, and dominantly warm parts of the USA, and world.  ...So we ARE growing in numbers.

The New generation IS more open, although not as many as we would like, and not nearly enough girls/women - however, look at the number of additional Nude Beaches, or clothing optional locations there are today verses yesterday.  Granted, it Will be a lot long time before the land locked states will be as accepting.

But today, if you look at the college aged young adults, including the girls - if a boyfriend suggests to his girlfriend that they go 'try out' a local nude beach, he is likely to get a 'Yes - lets go' or 'maybeeee' from a 30% to 50% of the gals.  In the past - 15/20 years ago, you might get 5% to consider it.

So I do have 'hope' for the future concerning growth in our numbers.

At least, that is My opinion.  Like Aaron, I would like to know what the opinion concerning this subject is.  ...Do you have a 'optimistic' outlook, or something different?

Like the previous posters on this thread, I am hopeful for the future. I don't think change should solely depend on who is president. The change he presents is likely the change that society at large has been calling for. Thus change needs to come from the grassroots, not from the top. What we need to cause this change are more of us opening up to our friends, sharing our experiences, and perhaps getting them to join us, or at least to understand why we enjoy being nude. MrMcGoo makes a good point that this rate of acceptance has increased, and in all likelihood will continue to increase. Change will not come by having leading figures admitting they enjoy being nude. People will simply cast that off as eccentric. It needs to be much more basic. I do think it can happen though, so we need to keep spreading the word and inviting others.

I'm sure I come off pessimistic here but I don't see a lot of change coming. While it's amazing that a black man has become the POTUS, there are many other barriers that need to break. I doubt you'll ever see an athiest become President. I mean pretty much never. You probably won't see an openly homosexual man become President. Probably not in our lifetime. So, while it's great that Obama is President and that he's the first African-American to become President... we still have very, very far to go.

I think it's not just Americans but most of the world thats pinning their hopes on President Obama to save us all from the rut the whole globe seems to find itself in. Hope is good, change is possible, but its going to take years and years to turn things around and I think its foolish to think that things are suddenly going to get better over night. President Obama is a well spoken, charming man who literally have to carry the weight of the World on his shoulders, I don't think people quite realize how much they are expecting of this man. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 12 months, I truly hope everyone will be patient enough.

That said, whether there will be a dramatic changed towards nudism... I don't think so... There's a steady increase in tolerance and I'm sure 20 years from now people will be more open to the idea but I wouldn't expect the whole world to suddenly embrace it.

Off topic, I find the whole African American or Native American statements quite interesting. As far as my knowledge goes, President Obama is of mixed race with a white mother and black father... actually thats quite perfect, he is representing two major ethnic groups...  but I cant help wondering just what classifies you as African American or Native American... what do you call white Americans and what do you call yourself if you have parents from different ethnic groups? And I guess another thing that has me wondering, what happens one day when America chooses a 100% African American, will he or she then claim to be the first African American president and reclassify President Obama as being the first American President of Color??? I know, silly questions but never the less interesting food for thought, maybe a 100 years from now Americans will call themselves Americans regardless of ethnic background... the same could be said for us South Africans, maybe one day we will all call ourselves African.
